Enrichment Opportunities

IMS "Jazz" Band

The Independence Middle School Jazz Band is a musical opportunity open to sixth, seventh, and eighth grade band members.  This creative music-making ensemble performs in a variety of concerts throughout the year striving to provide students with the chance to play in a broad range of musical styles.  This ensemble also affords students the opportunity to perform in a smaller setting with non-traditional concert band instruments (guitar, bass, piano, drum set).  The ensemble is set in September based upon the teacher's recommendation.

IMS + IHS Band Buddies

This optional program matches experienced high school instrumentalists with middle school students for short help sessions that meet one day each week throughout the second and third academic quarters.  This is a wonderful opportunity for middle school students to receive free assistance on their instrument while the high school student gleans experience by mentoring the next generation of musicians.  As space is limited, please contact the teacher in September for details.

Eighth Grade Marching Band

Each year, the Independence High School Band Program allows willing eighth grade students to participate as members of the IHS Marching Band for the varsity football season.  From band camp through the final game of the season, all eighth grade band students are eligible to participate upon the teacher’s recommendation.  Detailed information will be distributed during February with sign-ups taking place during March/April of the student’s seventh grade year.  A non-refundable deposit will be requested to assure your participation in the ensemble.  Planning for the IHS Marching Band takes place in March with individual charts created for each student during May/June.  Therefore, it is paramount that our instrumentation be set during early Spring to ensure accurate planning for the coming season.

Ohio Music Education Association Solo & Ensemble Adjudication

Each year, the IMS Band Program participates in the Ohio Music Education Association’s Junior High School Solo and Ensemble Adjudication.  This opportunity is a means for students to perform, either by themselves or in small groups, for regional judges and receive extensive comments and a rating based upon their performance.  Typically, the event takes place on a Saturday in late March or early April.  Preparation for the OMEA Solo and Ensemble event usually begins in January and is an excellent opportunity for students to perfect a finished product and receive comments from other music educators throughout the state.  In the past fifteen years, students of the IMS Band Program have garnered 142 top “Superior” ratings and 63 “Excellent” ratings!
