On January 24, 2010, the Independence High School Wind Ensemble took to the Severance Hall stage for a once-in-a-lifetime performance. Included on the 45-minute program was the premier of Flourish, a musical work by prolific band composer David Shaffer. Shaffer was commissioned by the IHS Music Boosters to compose a musical work for Kendal L. Gunlicks, IHS Music Director, who retired in June 2009 after 35 years of service to the Independence Local School District. Look for Festive Flourish under the C. L. Barnhouse label.
On May 9, 2018, the Independence High School Wind Ensemble had the pleasure of premiering the work “Quintescent Journey” by composer Lisa Galvin. Beginning with a surprise in-person introduction of the composer in January 2018, Galvin’s works quickly became Wind Ensemble favorites. Ms. Galvin made a four-hour (or more) round-trip journey that day to bring the IHS Wind Ensemble their first draft of the composition in-person and to discuss the work with the ensemble during their class time. Two months later, Ms. Galvin also made a surprise appearance at their OMEA Large Group Adjudication at a neighboring school to hear the IHS Wind Ensemble perform one of her other works. A consummate professional and gifted musician, the composition process was elevated to a high level for our students in large part due to Lisa Galvin’s humility and dedication to her craft. You can find Quintescent Journey under the C. L. Barnhouse label.
